All That Rain

Mon, 7 Apr 2014, 07:54 PM (-06:00)

From the street, you could see clouds in the west. From the highway, you could see dark skies. From the overpass, you could see towering thunderheads with dark black foundations and columns climbing into the sky where here and there there were breaks in the clouds that revealed vistas of billowing white and gold against a […]

Irises on a Cloudy Day

Mon, 31 Mar 2014, 09:12 AM (-06:00)

The sunshine of yesterday is gone, although they say on the radio that the it might return in the afternoon. The wind chimes are chiming in a warm, springtime breeze. The Irises by the street are standing tall. I saw Mary looking at them as she drove by.

Hot Cold Dry Warm Cool Wet

Sun, 9 Mar 2014, 11:06 AM (-06:00)

1. There’s a butter-yellow butterfly fluttering among the Irises. The blossoms came out of nowhere and opened last night. And the butterfly has found them, uncertain about the white fall, intrigued by the yellow anther. And there is an orange butterfly in the Lacey Oak, resting on a branch, opening and closing its wings. As […]

Running Around Town on Rainy Afternoon

Sat, 8 Mar 2014, 06:54 PM (-06:00)

Somewhere around 2.5 miles, I heard thunder. Just a little swishy roll somewhere in the distance. Not long after, I heard it again. More pronounced this time, starting overhead and rolling into the west, ending in a punctuated crash. The clouds over the Hill Country were black. The wind blowing this way. Misty drizzle turned […]

Apple Blossoms

Mon, 17 Feb 2014, 08:17 PM (-06:00)

In these days of negative temperatures in the Northeast and snow-snarled traffic jams shutting down cities, I hesitate to talk about the weather. I hesitate to talk about how the cold front came thru and passed right by, leaving blue skies and sunshine and warm temperatures behind. I hesitate to talk about the mid-80s that […]

Not Like This

Sat, 8 Feb 2014, 03:07 PM (-06:00)

The sky is clear. The sun is out. The leaves of the Monterey Oak are shining green/orange/brown. The ice of yesterday in the bird bath is melted now and warm. Bill is in his front yard in short sleeves and shorts mowing his yard. It’s certainly not like this here.

These Rainy Times

Sun, 13 Oct 2013, 06:57 PM (-06:00)

There was a time not so long ago when the rain that we’ve had this year would have seemed on the dry side. A time when we would have considered the half-inches here and there and a couple two-inch rains and last night’s six-inch downpour as lacking in the aggregate. But we’re in the midst of […]

One Fine Day

Sun, 6 Oct 2013, 07:59 PM (-06:00)

In the deep dark of early morning, thunder woke us. Rather, the dogs barking at distant thunder woke us, and then storm’s approach and the eventual rain kept us up. Rain, glorious rain! The storm passed just before dawn. The race was at 7:30, so we left an hour before, watching the front pass to […]

Melons and Peppers and Tomatoes

Sat, 7 Sep 2013, 09:17 PM (-06:00)

So we stood in the backyard again today, watching the weather in the east. We watched the dark clouds part and drift to the north and south of us. We watched blue sky open overhead while thunder rolled somewhere in the west where it was undoubtedly raining hard. In full sun, tantalizing raindrops fell from […]

It Passed Us

Wed, 4 Sep 2013, 08:28 PM (-06:00)

“Come look. You have to see this,” she said.  There was a band of green on the map. And then yellow. And then orange. And red. The color splotch marched across her computer screen from east to west. It was coming right at us. “Hey, you took my place,” she later complained when I sat […]
