{"id":2552,"date":"2013-01-13T06:08:44","date_gmt":"2013-01-13T12:08:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/augerhandle.net\/blogs\/jumpingfish\/?p=2552"},"modified":"2013-01-13T06:10:21","modified_gmt":"2013-01-13T12:10:21","slug":"holualoa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/augerhandle.net\/blogs\/jumpingfish\/2013\/01\/13\/holualoa\/","title":{"rendered":"Holualoa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After <a href=\"https:\/\/augerhandle.net\/blogs\/jumpingfish\/2013\/01\/08\/cheryls-present\/\">our morning at Kealakekua Bay<\/a>, we returned our rented snorkel gear to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snorkelbob.com\/\">Snorkel Bob&#8217;s<\/a>. It had served us well. And we considered it a particular bonus that they didn&#8217;t charge us for an extra day.<\/p>\n<p>After that, we drove a narrow, winding road up to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.holualoahawaii.com\/\">Holualoa<\/a>,\u00a0a hamlet\u00a0on the slopes above Kona where there are art galleries and a cafe Trudy had targeted. By the time we got there, we figured we&#8217;d be ready for a snack. Sadly, when we got there, the cafe and most of the galleries were closed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We did go into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipuguy.com\/\">Ipu Hale gallery<\/a>. Here there were ipu gourds carved in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hanahou.com\/pages\/magazine.asp?Action=DrawArticle&amp;ArticleID=611&amp;MagazineID=39\">the Ni&#8217;ihau method<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And we walked into the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.konaweb.com\/ukegallery\/index.html\">Holualoa Ukulele Gallery<\/a> in the old Holualoa post office.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/augerhandle.net\/blogs\/jumpingfish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/DSC_8134.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 8134\" width=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sam took us into his shop in back and talked to us about his ukuleles and his workshops (10 days, seven hours per day) where people come in a learn how to play and how to <em>make<\/em> a ukulele.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/augerhandle.net\/blogs\/jumpingfish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/DSC_8140.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 8140\" width=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But besides the gourd guy and Sam, there just wasn&#8217;t a whole lot left to do in Holualoa, since we&#8217;d missed the closing bell.<\/p>\n<p>The fair and industrious Trudy got a big bottle of water at the general store, because we were thirsty, and we sat on the curb and guzzled it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/augerhandle.net\/blogs\/jumpingfish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/DSC_8124.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 8124\" width=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And we took a few pictures of the narrow roads and the funny, zigzag stripes at stop signs and crosswalks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/augerhandle.net\/blogs\/jumpingfish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/DSC_8126.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 8126\" width=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And as afternoon gave way to evening, we drove back down to Kona in search of gas and dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t ask me just how afternoon gave way to evening when we did so little, but &#8230; we were on vacation, we were in no rush, and so we just took our time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After our morning at Kealakekua Bay, we returned our rented snorkel gear to Snorkel Bob&#8217;s.
