{"id":2800,"date":"2013-07-11T21:06:10","date_gmt":"2013-07-12T03:06:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/augerhandle.net\/blogs\/jumpingfish\/?p=2800"},"modified":"2013-07-11T21:06:10","modified_gmt":"2013-07-12T03:06:10","slug":"the-pioneers-of-napau-trail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/augerhandle.net\/blogs\/jumpingfish\/2013\/07\/11\/the-pioneers-of-napau-trail\/","title":{"rendered":"The Pioneers of Napau Trail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>And now, we return to the long-neglected telling of our trip to Hawaii more than a year ago&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The fair and industrious Trudy began studying the guide before we stepped onto the <a href=\"http:\/\/hvo.wr.usgs.gov\/volcanowatch\/archive\/1999\/99_05_27.html\">pahoehoe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/augerhandle.net\/blogs\/jumpingfish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DSC_9325.jpg\" alt=\"DSC 9325\" width=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We weren&#8217;t sure how far we wanted to go, since there was so much to do that day, but we ran into Russel and Mary Grace who were friends of Ira&#8217;s and said they hiked often there. They gave us some suggestions and said we would regret it. So Napau Trail it was.<\/p>\n<p>The lava field extended to the horizon with <a href=\"http:\/\/hvo.wr.usgs.gov\/volcanowatch\/archive\/1997\/97_05_02.html\">Mauna Ulu<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/havo\/planyourvisit\/hike_day_puuhuluhulu.htm\">Pu\u2018u Huluhulu<\/a>\u00a0(shaggy hill) rising up in the distance out of the cinder, spatter and ash.
