Bruce Schneier is one. A top computer security expert with a knack for communicating, he <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Bruce-Schneier\/e\/B000AP7EVS\">writes books<\/a>, he <a href=\"http:\/\/www.schneier.com\/\">blogs online<\/a>\u00a0and recently he has been publicly &#8230; shall we say &#8230; skeptical of what the Internet has become and what we&#8217;re learning about our government.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, he <a href=\"http:\/\/www.schneier.com\/blog\/archives\/2013\/08\/restoring_trust.html\">wrote this<\/a>\u00a0in a discussion of how government and corporate pronouncements have completely lost our trust:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>NSA Director Gen. Keith Alexander has claimed that the NSA&#8217;s massive surveillance and data mining programs have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/post-politics\/wp\/2013\/06\/18\/nsa-head-surveillance-helped-thwart-more-than-50-terror-attempts\/\">helped<\/a> stop more than 50 terrorist plots, 10 inside the U.S. Do you believe him? I think it depends on your definition of &#8220;helped.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The whole thing is worth reading. But this one sentence pushed a hot button that I was trying to describe to the fair and industrious <em>and infinitely patient <\/em>Trudy.<\/p>\n<p>Whether we believe the good director general or not does not only depend on the definition of <em>helped<\/em>. It depends on<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>what <em>surveillance<\/em> means<\/li>\n<li>what qualifies as a <em>data mining program<\/em><\/li>\n<li>what <em>stop<\/em> means<\/li>\n<li>what <em>terrorist<\/em> means<\/li>\n<li>what a <em>plot<\/em> is<\/li>\n<li>what it means to be <em>inside the US<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In short, not a single word can be taken at face value. Nothing is what it seems.<\/p>\n<p>People joked for years about Clinton&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/news_and_politics\/chatterbox\/1998\/09\/bill_clinton_and_the_meaning_of_is.html\"><em>it depends on what the meaning of is is<\/em><\/a>, but this kind of triangulation is now the norm.<\/p>\n<p>Schneier is right.
