All the other kids had chosen their books and were sitting on the floor reading their chosen words and looking at their chosen pictures.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cHere,\u201d I said. “What about Denise Fleming? Look at these colors!”<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, I\u2019m ok.”<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t you want a book?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cSomebody else got the one I wanted.”<\/p>\n
\u201cOh I see lots of books here,\u201d I said. \u201cHow about Eric Carle? Look at this!”<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m ok,\u201d he said. And he turned to join the other kids who were now lining up at the door getting ready to return to their classroom.<\/p>\n
He stood at the end of the line and hung his head. He was wiping his eyes.<\/p>\n
I tapped him on the shoulder. \u201cCome on,\u201d I said, \u201cI\u2019m sure we can find something.\u201d He walked with me back to the table.<\/p>\n
I gathered several books and moved them around on the table, having no idea what else to do, thinking that something might still catch his attention.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat about these?\u201d I asked. \u201cHey, what about Mercer Mayer?”<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, I\u2019m ok,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
His head was still hanging low. I moved the books around some more and grabbed a few others. And then I heard him say something.<\/p>\n
I bent lower. \u201cI\u2019m sorry Michael, what did you say?”<\/p>\n
He pointed to the table, to the Mercer Mayer.<\/p>\n
