In keeping with my arm-chair, marginally-informed analyses of the last few days, I have some comments about <a href=\"http:\/\/thenextweb.com\/insider\/2016\/03\/12\/obama-on-fbi-apple-sxsw\/\">a comment he made<\/a> about the FBI\u2019s effort to force Apple to fabricate a security backdoor.<\/p>\n<p>Our President said, \u201cWe can\u2019t fetishize our phones above other values.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve sat on that statement for several days. And now, I wish to try out that same reasoning in some different circumstances, just to see how the analytical technique holds up&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>We can\u2019t fetishize our banks above other values.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We can\u2019t fetishize guns above other values.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We can\u2019t fetishize the right to a jury of your peers above other values.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We can\u2019t fetishize the right to vote above other values.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We can\u2019t fetishize the right to remain silent above other values.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Do any of these statements make sense? No, they don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>This, in my humble opinion was simply an effort to trivialize the issue. To short-circuit informed thought. To radiate a false aura of balance. To play on fear. And to smear anyone who believes in encryption as a <em>fetishist<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 80%;\"><em>For what it\u2019s worth, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schneier.com\/blog\/archives\/2016\/03\/another_fbi_fil.html\">this page by Bruce Schneier<\/a> has some pointers to non-arm-chair analyses of the same issue, and <a href=\"https:\/\/backchannel.com\/the-law-is-clear-the-fbi-cannot-make-apple-rewrite-its-os-9ae60c3bbc7b#.1ew4jirzw\">this article by Susan Crawford<\/a> bluntly summarizes why the law is clear on this topic.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Obama was in town the other day for the\u00a0annual rite of the techno-hip.
