Garnet Sand<\/h3>\n<p>In Munising, we stopped at a grocery store to stock up on provisions. And we stopped at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/piro\/planyourvisit\/visitorcenters.htm\">Pictured Rock National Lakeshore and Hiawatha National Forest Interagency Visitor&rsquo;s Center<\/a>&nbsp;(quite a mouthful) where the ranger suggested&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/piro\/learn\/news\/sand-point-beach.htm\">Sand Point<\/a>&nbsp;&mdash;&nbsp;that there was a little bit of a trail there that we might enjoy in spite of the rain and wind, and that we should go out onto the beach to see the red garnet sand.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That beach is a top summer beach by some estimates, but on this day, the weather was blustery and gray and rainy and&#8230; Wait. What?<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Garnet\">Garnet<\/a> sand!?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We saw it with our own eyes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jumpingfish.smugmug.com\/Blogpix\/2017\/11\/i-Bn6ng9G\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Blogpix\/2017\/11\/i-Bn6ng9G\/0\/eecbc714\/L\/DSC_0006b-L.jpg\" alt=\"\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Red-pink garnet sand washed onto the shore by the wind and rain and waves that over the years have eroded the sandstone cliffs of Pictured Rock.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Deciding on a Hike<\/h3>\n<p>On that day, we could see how the weather might erode those cliffs. Because there was much wind. And because there was rain.&nbsp;And waves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jumpingfish.smugmug.com\/Blogpix\/2017\/11\/i-wmb86gN\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Blogpix\/2017\/11\/i-wmb86gN\/0\/180b15a2\/L\/DSC_0121-L.jpg\" alt=\"\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jumpingfish.smugmug.com\/Blogpix\/2017\/11\/i-3LtnjCn\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Blogpix\/2017\/11\/i-3LtnjCn\/0\/ca533539\/L\/DSC_0112-L.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Enough to keep tentative tourists at bay. But&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>The Smiling and Patient Ben<\/em> was unfazed by the wind and rain and waves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jumpingfish.smugmug.com\/Blogpix\/2017\/11\/i-k3KRmpx\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Blogpix\/2017\/11\/i-k3KRmpx\/0\/b3809d1e\/L\/DSC_0104-L.jpg\" alt=\"\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>The Fair and Industrious Trudy<\/em> was (as she always is) in the mood for something fun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jumpingfish.smugmug.com\/Blogpix\/2017\/11\/i-GQ2DBg5\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Blogpix\/2017\/11\/i-GQ2DBg5\/0\/bf3cfa68\/L\/DSC_0116-L.jpg\" alt=\"\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And so we went instead on a hike into the woods along the ridge on the top of the cliffs along the lakeshore&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jumpingfish.smugmug.com\/Blogpix\/2017\/11\/i-fM2KRsw\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Blogpix\/2017\/11\/i-fM2KRsw\/0\/7fd493cc\/L\/DSC_0225-L.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;into the haunts of nature.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1.
