Out at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thule\">ultima Thule<\/a>. Yet celestial music plays even in those farthest reaches.<\/p>\n<p>On New Year&rsquo;s Eve 2018, <a href=\"http:\/\/pluto.jhuapl.edu\/\">the spacecraft<\/a> that visited Pluto approached, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2018\/12\/31\/science\/new-horizons-ultima-thule-flyby.html\">encountered<\/a> and promptly left behind a second celestial body orbiting our sun in the distant, primordial quiet. A body beyond Pluto in the <a href=\"https:\/\/solarsystem.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/kuiper-belt\/overview\/\">Kuiper<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kuiper_belt\">Belt<\/a>. They call it&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/(486958)_2014_MU69\">MU69<\/a>. They call it Ultima Thule. On that New Year&rsquo;s Eve, New Horizons was there.<\/p>\n<p>At the appointed hour on New Year&rsquo;s Day, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.planetary.org\/blogs\/emily-lakdawalla\/2011\/3277.html\">DSN dish<\/a> in Spain, <a href=\"https:\/\/eyes.nasa.gov\/dsn\/dsn.html\">scheduled<\/a> with care, locked onto a stream of downlinking data. The mission operations team confirmed that the spacecraft was healthy. C&amp;DH reported that the SSR pointer was as expected.
