When the world wearies&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>This morning, <a href=\"https:\/\/gardenrant.com\/author\/loreneef\">Lorene<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/gardenrant.com\/\">Garden Rant<\/a> fame, wrote about <a href=\"https:\/\/gardenrant.com\/2026\/06\/im-letting-my-plants-speak-for-themselves.html\">letting her plants speak for themselves<\/a>, in which she posted just photos and names of the plants in her garden. She led with this wonderful quote from <a href=\"https:\/\/thedailygardener.org\/otb20210602\/\">Minnie Aumonier<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>When the world wearies and society ceases to satisfy, there is always the garden.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Seems particularly true today.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Passiflora on our doorstep&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>Years ago a wild <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npsot.org\/posts\/native-plant\/passiflora-lutea\/\">Yellow Passion Vine<\/a> popped up in the front yard. Vines do that from time to time &mdash; Mother Nature testing the waters. Many are pokey, but this darling had no thorns, and I somehow knew it to be a native larval host.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jumpingfish.smugmug.com\/Blogpix\/2026\/06\/i-LJjMBXH\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Blogpix\/2026\/06\/i-LJjMBXH\/0\/MzpngMHk389nJwQ2tkZ6pwR8NFt2DBjkdLVs26s96\/S\/passiflora-sprout-S.jpg\" alt=\"vine sprout\" width=\"300\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I built a trellis. Dug up the sprout and transplanted it. Now it reliably emerges afresh every spring.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jumpingfish.smugmug.com\/Blogpix\/2026\/06\/i-tqQghrL\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Blogpix\/2026\/06\/i-tqQghrL\/0\/NKVnFn2VWfHkCzRDjkMCd8FpfLmqrDxT6Cnd8ZqWj\/M\/passiflora-trellis-M.jpg\" alt=\"vine on trellis\" width=\"300\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You might notice that it thins out a bit at the top. Indeed<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jumpingfish.smugmug.com\/Blogpix\/2026\/06\/i-3zJkLfZ\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Blogpix\/2026\/06\/i-3zJkLfZ\/0\/Lf8KXWZP65jm2fRV27Sn9Fjx8v9JR8JzX6tCc9g5Z\/M\/passiflora-munched-top-M.jpg\" alt=\"gnawed back vine\" width=\"300\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That would be due to this <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gulf_fritillary\">culprit<\/a> &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jumpingfish.smugmug.com\/Blogpix\/2026\/06\/i-VcdXMTw\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Blogpix\/2026\/06\/i-VcdXMTw\/0\/M7bMHhCDzwQrdrbkPC52cw2th6C3MHZhwNMVmmBxG\/M\/gulf-fritillary-larva-M.jpg\" alt=\"caterpillar\" width=\"300\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last year, they gnawed the vine to the ground, leaving nothing on the trellis, which made us sad.
